From the tap to your teeth: Water fluoridation
Your kitchen faucet can help protect your smile. Here’s how community water fluoridation fights cavities, and what to do if you’re on well or filtered water.
How it helps
Cavities form when plaque bacteria turn sugars into acid that eats away at enamel. Fluoride strengthens enamel and can even help heal very early cavities. Community water systems adjust fluoride to 0.7 mg per liter, the level shown to protect teeth.
Real-world benefits
Fluoridated water cuts cavities by roughly a quarter in both kids and adults, and it saves families money on fillings, pain, and missed school or work.
Is it safe?
Communities have fluoridated water for more than 80 years, and research at U.S. levels hasn’t found convincing evidence of harm. The main side effect is mild fluorosis: faint white spots that usually only show up when we dry the teeth during an exam.
Well water or not sure?
Call your water utility to ask about your fluoride level. If you have a private well, have it tested yearly, including fluoride. Children in non-fluoridated areas may benefit from fluoride drops or lozenges; ask us or your pediatrician.
